Swinging with the Big Boys: Brown Pride from Velasquez

Disgusted as I was about the title fight between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida in UFC 104 where Rua was robbed of his rightful title because of the lousy scoring of the judges, I can't help but admire Cain Velasquez and his ascent into the top of his game, cementing his place among the top heavyweights in the world. He had carved his name with rigorous training, admirable work ethic and pushed his body to the top were he reaped the reward of all his hard work, blood, sweat and tears.

And the battles he fought were no joke; there were no flukes and they were indeed wars that tested not only his physical strength but his mental toughness and heart as well. The fighters he demolished were all top contenders in the heavyweight division. Cheik Congo is a formidable opponent and even though Cain ate some hard shots that took his knees for a few seconds, he still bounced back with resilience and ended up with a win. He outstruck Congo and dominated him on the ground, a feat that nobody ever accomplished in the octagon before. And as for his latest adversary, Ben Rothwell is a really big, angry man with legitimate knockout power in both hands. Ben won 14 of his last 15 fights and he is also the former IFL champion where he is undefeated with a 9-0 record. He also disposed Ricco Rodriguez and survived a brutal battle with Andrei Arlovski afew years back. And anyone who could survive in the ring with Arlovski for a decision is sure to be tough as nails. But come fight night, Cain Velasquez just dominated Big Ben with his relentless takedowns and brutal ground and pound. I have never seen Ben Rothwell manhandled like that as Cain neutralized his striking and took him down at will. And once in the ground, Cain just plain imposed his will until the referee had no choice but to stop the fight because Cain was landing shots after hard shots. It was really a great night for Mexicans as their local hero proved that Latinos can swing with the big boys in the heavyweight division.

And now a prospective match-up looms, a match-up that will be the biggest test of Cain Velasquez's young career. UFC 106 brings Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin together for a stellar battle of gigantic proportions to see who deserves to be the heir to the throne of the heavyweights. And whoever wins the title fight, Cain Velasquez has earned a rightful shot at the crown as well. I just hope that I finish my custom research papers on time before that match up is signed, sealed and delivered. Shane Carwin or Brock Lesnar, it will be the biggest and toughest challenge of Cain's life. It will be a battle of guts, heart and pride and I hope that I will be at ringside when that comes. Bloody hotdogs anyone?
