so this weekend was an absolute blast, i road-tripped up to las vegas with my boy james strang, it was going to be his first bjj tournament and i could feel his nervous excitement the whole drive. we met up with some of my other boys who were competing: dj saylor, andy grooms, mike martin, dylan means, charlie brown, and josh jones who i drove back with...all in all we did pretty well, dj saylor place 2nd in his gi and no-gi division, while dylan means took 1st in his gi division and 2nd in his no-gi division, mike martin also returned home with some nice shiny hardware, and in his first ever bjj tournament james strang took 2nd place in his gi division, congratulations to all of you guys you battled your butts off...of course there's many things to take away from this event but the main thing for me was simply to PASS THE GUARD, my guys had a major brain fart in their earlier matches when it came to passing the guard and we lost a few matches because of it but when we did start to do what we do everyday in practice and pass the guard good things happened and we won those matches...i think that it's great to do competitions even if you are just a regular bjj student who has a 9-5, it's great because it gives you something to train for, a concrete, tangible event to prepare for and it's good also because competition really sharpens your game and makes your weaknesses and what you need to work on really evident, so i definitely encourage all students to just go ahead and sign up for your next local tournament and go have fun...
